Xeomin® is a cosmetic injection that is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in treating moderate to severe facial wrinkles, including crow’s feet lines, frown lines, and forehead wrinkles, in addition to several medical conditions.
 
Xeomin® contains many of the same ingredients as Botox, another cosmetic injection. However, unlike Botox, Xeomin® has no additives and does not need to be refrigerated. The active ingredient in Xeomin® is incobotulinumtoxinA (Botox is onabotulinumtoxinA), which is a neuromodulator that blocks nerve signals in specific muscles, causing a temporary pause in the activity of those muscles. It is important to note that Xeomin® injections are not the same as dermal fillers.
 
The reason that Xeomin® injections are used to treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles is that muscle contractions, along with decreased collagen production, are the primary cause of wrinkles and fine lines developing on our skin. As our skin loses collagen and elasticity, it does not bounce back into form as well after repeated muscle contractions, which occur with any facial expression you make such as squinting, smiling, frowning, raising your eyebrows, and more.

With that in mind, Xeomin® injections give the muscles and skin in the treatment area a period of reprieve from constant muscle activity so that the skin has time to smoothen itself back into form.

You can safely receive Xeomin® injections once every 12 weeks. However, depending on your particular needs and treatment goals, you may not need an injection this frequently. When you discuss your goals and needs with your Xeomin® provider, they will recommend the frequency to you.

When preparing for Xeomin® injections you should avoid any cosmetic treatments and certain medications for at least a week before the scheduled appointment. Xeomin® treatments usually take between ten to twenty minutes to complete. Prior to the injection, your provider will cleanse the skin in the treatment area, mark out the injection sites, and numb the area. After it is sufficiently numbed, they will administer the injections. The number of injections your provider administers will depend on the size of the treatment area. After the injections, you should be free to return to your normal routine immediately after the treatment session without any complications!
