Kybella is composed of deoxycholic acid, which is a substance that naturally occurs in the body and aids in digestion. In the stomach, deoxycholic acid works to break down fat that has been consumed in foods and drinks. This is important because the person who will be administering the injections needs to examine the site and understand the client’s medical history; this will allow them to create a personalized treatment plan that will produce the best results.

Preparing

The day of your Kybella® treatment: You may wear your normal skincare and makeup to Flawless the day of your treatment. Melanie will clean the treatment area prior to your injections.

Procedure

Treatment can only be administered by a Kybella® trained health care specialist, such as Melanie. Melanie will examine the area under and around your chin to determine if Kybella® is right for you. Then, she will tailor your treatment to the amount of fat under the chin and your aesthetic goals.

At each treatment, you will receive multiple small injections under your chin, and the injection process takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The exact number of injections will depend on the amount of fat you have under your chin and your desired profile.

Since everyone’s chin profile is different, the number of treatments varies from patient to patient. Melanie will help determine how many treatment sessions you need based on the amount and distribution of your submental fat and your personal treatment goals. Typically a minimum of two. Each Kybella® treatment session is given at least 1 month apart, and you should not receive more than 6 treatments.

Recovery

Kybella is non-invasive, and much like other injectables or fillers, there is no significant downtime associated with treatment, so clients can return to their normal day-to-day activities after the session. After Kybella® treatment, you will likely have some swelling, bruising, or numbness under your chin. The most common side effects occur in the treatment area and include:

Side effects are usually temporary and often resolve on their own. Some clients may also experience some post-injection discomfort from Kybella; however, this is easily ameliorated using over-the-counter pain relievers. Any bruising, redness, or tenderness at the injection site should resolve within a week or two and should not cause any long-term effects.

Aftercare

Be sure to inform me or the office if you develop an uneven smile, facial muscle weakness, or difficulty swallowing. As always, contact the office if you have any questions or concerns. If this is an emergency, contact your Medical Provider or Urgent Care Center.

Results

Results will start to appear after 3 weeks and continue to improve for the following 3 months.

Since the injections cause the fat cells to die, the targeted cells are no longer able to store fat; therefore, the results from Kybella are permanent. However, the important exception to this statement is that new fat cells can develop under the chin with significant weight gain that can cause a double chin to reappear. Although there have been cases of people who gain weight and still retain their treatment results, to maintain results in the long term, one must commit to healthy lifestyle changes, such as eating a well-balanced and nutritious diet and regularly exercising.
